That was fun and very clever! Sears and Roebuck was my first inclination ( showing my age! Lol) but went down another rabbit hole first! I really liked looking for the “partners”! Thank you!

Ooh, "cool!" -- this "woman of a certain age" will take it! -- Thanks, Danny!

Extremely clever. Still not sure how I arranged the parens.

Thanks, boharr -- you got 'em. -- Actually the (#)'s made the puzzle less than elegant; a bit of a cheat. I'm sure the pros could have made it so the partner's first letter would have worked. But I've never been accused of elegance, and my excuse is I needed to hint at the pairs anyway. :)

Terrific! I’ve loved the MMM, MOAT, and MEOW metas this week. Who needs WSJCC and MGWCC? Well, I don’t really mean that. But seriously, you do-called amateurs are getting GOOD at this. Thanks, whimsy!

Thanks, Laura. I'm glad people get a kick out of the wackiness I sometimes produce!

Even though I had seen this during its testing I had not seen the final, and much cleaner, puzzle. Fun puzzle sure to pliés! Thanks Claudia, I think those of us of a certain age had an advantage, but hey those of us of a certain age do NOT often have the advantage so I'm fine with it this time.

Thanks for your help on this DrT! But, um, what do you mean "those of us...", Kemosabe? :)

Great puzzle. I saw Sears and Roebuck first, but then couldn't see anything else. Kept coming back to it and finally saw Penn and Teller, and then realized it was the proper names and not the first word of the clue (which I had been focusing on). So very clever!
                    • whimsy constructor · 2023-03-30T02:43:20.529Z
Thanks, Matthew -- and I was thinking Penn and Teller might be one of the more obscure ones. But as DrTom and I always conclude while test solving: different folks know different strokes! One of my nudges may be to indicate what fields the pairs are in.

That was more fun than Barnum and Bailey! Now for some Ernest and Julio!
                        • whimsy constructor · 2023-03-30T02:48:46.542Z
I read Ernest and Julio, but my head thought Emack and Bolio! :) Dang! I coulda used Ben and Jerry too maybe. Next puzzle!

What fun! LIke Ergcat, I saw Sears in the clues and remembered having entered ROEBUCK in the grid, and that was enough. There was also the smile when I saw the first four letters and the AHA seeing how it related to the title.
I remembered the song, but until I read Wikipedia just now, I hadn't remembered that it was sung by Pearl Bailey. Also interesting to read in Wikipedia about the guys who wrote the song.
                          • whimsy constructor · 2023-03-30T12:38:24.323Z
Thanks, Bird --- During construction, the concept of this puzzle expanded from the much less interesting answer of TANGO and some blander title when I noticed I had extra T's -- and the ballet-inspired title that followed was just the frosting...! (For a second I thought you were saying she sang a song with that exact title. :) Thanks for prompting me to discover the origin of Mairzy Doats et. al!)
                            • Bird Lives 4s · 2023-03-31T00:22:48.099Z
My Google search took me to a picture of the 45rpm version of "Two to Tango" (though not "Pas de Deux")by Pearl Bailey. BTW, to this day, every time I'm in the grains aisle and see "pearl barley," I think that there has to be a really good joke here, something better than the obvious. But by the time I come up with it, there will only be a handful of people who recognize the name.
I never would have guessed thjat "Mairzy Dotes" was written by two guys born in Russia. I can't wait for Beyonce to cover it on her next album.

Very clever. I noticed the Sears and Roebuck right away, but didn't follow up until the nudges got my brain properly lubricated. Was worth solving, as advertised by the Friday Zoom group.
