Home Bound

Meta Prompt
Something you may need to do if you are leaving for home
This may prove to be a little more challenging than my Pop Culture but definitely less so than Colorful words. I am going to say that it is at best a Persian and for most will be a Calico.
The idea came from another puzzle, I think it may have been a Cap'n Rick, where I thought the mechanism was what mine is and was wrong. Never to let failure stand in my way I thought, "OK, well that will be my mechanism"...ta da a meta is born!
Kitten
CALICO?
PERSIAN?
Puma
Lion
My testers, and those who improved this several-fold, were Mark Woychick, Cap'n Rick and a meta aficionado but non-muggle, David Schrager. They managed to move me in the right direction to make this more solvable or at least clearer.
There will be nudges on Friday and if you are a Muggle there will be a leaderboard on that site.
Nudges:
Nudge 1] As with many of my puzzles the Title tells you a LOT!
Nudge 2] You can be HOME BOUND, meaning heading for home, of course or you may be bound to your home.
Nudge 3] If Nudge 2 is true. What might you look to do to other words in the meta?
Nudge 4] When you are doing what you should be doing you can look in symmetric places.
Nudge 5] Then, if you do what Nudge 3 suggests, what is the usual next step when you make a new word?
Nudge 6] You are looking for a 5 letter SINGLE word
MORE nudges!
Nudge 7] What if this had been named EARTH BOUND and there were words in the Grid like WORM, QUAKE and DAY, what would you do?
Nudge 8] Now imagine there were clues for other words like April event = EASTER or Natural Disaster = TORNADO. What would you do now?
REVEAL:
Five entries would have their meaning changed if the word HOME was appended.
HOME PAGE = 1A START
HOME ECON = 42A LATIN
HOME ALARM = 7D IDEA
HOME PORT = 61D DUTY
HOME TEAM = 51A EAGLES
The first letters from those "new" answers spell SLIDE, something you may need to do if you are leaving for home.
The low solve rate and large number of incorrect submissions are NOT the fault of the solvers but more mine. The "alternates" were a stretch sometimes, and I can see how many people came up with different answers: Tag-up (very popular), SMILE (most of the letters, probably a poorly defined alternate) STEAL (also most of the letters and baseball related) and others. I apologize for making what was meant to be a relatively easy puzzle very difficult.

I must admit I kinda fell into home plate rather than gracefully slid. Home Page is to me the better answer to 20ac than just Page (and a good alternative answer to 1ac giving us the S), and Home Econ is a better answer than just Econ (which is still taught in schools!) - but is not a good alternative answer to 42ac, more the other way around. Similarly Home Port is a good alternative answer to 61d giving us the D, but not a better answer to 57ac. So I think I’m missing the elegance here and tripped & face planted onto the plate lol

      Difficult one. Thanks, DrTom.

Berto's was pretty much my experience too. I wasn't sure if the idea was words that required Home to fit their definitions (such as Home Page and Home Econ) or words that may have Home before them. And I wasn't sure if the alternative answer were examples of the home entries (EAGLES is a Home Team) or an alternative (Latin is a class no longer often taught). I got IDEA, DUTY and EAGLES and in order spell I-D-E and I figure I need two more and was able to figure with the with the baseball meaning of home that SLIDE would be a good guess.
14A having "home" in the clue puzzled me a bit.

I thought it might be "tag up" and my wife though it might be "slide". We got the S__DE and then backsolved for the L and I.

I enjoy this kind of metanism! While I found too many possibilities for PORT, ALARM and IDEA seemed a good match and then ECON paired nicely with STEERAGE ("Cheap way to travel"). Then I thought PAGE might fit "Olde workforce" (thinking medieval times)... and EAGLES was even a HOME TEAM!... so I had T/G/D? with I S E E. I figured I only had 2 or 3 correct and ended up guessing. ;) It was fun, and I'm eager to check the answer key. Thanks, DrTom!

LOVED this! Perfect balance of Dr. Tom clues and hints to help along the way. Metas should be fun and this one was. Loved that I had to puzzle out the alternative answers.

Cluing great fun as always! Meta choppier, but 4 out of 5 letters was enough to go aHAH. I still do not know what the D is. home port is a good place to begin a quest just like Start, home economics is outdated like Latin, home alarms will keep you awake like Ideas , .... home page something something something, and the home team is the beloved birds in Philly, Eagles.

Well my Navy background may have led me, and my solvers, astray. The US Navy when not at sea can be found at their Duty Station or Home Port. For instance when I was in the Navy my duty station/home port was Norfolk, Virginia. Granted the ship I was on was NEVER in port. It was the Columbus CG-12 which we all said meant Constantly Gone 12 months of the year.

Let me say "mea culpa" to everyone who had to struggle through finding the alternates. I screwed up in that I went back and forth between the two "possibilities" for HOME Econ and LATIN as well as HOME Port and DUTY STATION. If you were to look again at the Crosshare version you would see that I changed those two. I did not announce that there were clue changes because that would certainly tip the solution, I just tried to amend it for future solvers.
This one was created some time ago and then I got back from my car trek and needed to put one up. If I had read through it again I might have found the problems (I emphasize might because one seldom sees the problems because of familiarity with the puzzle - confirmation bias!) and corrected it beforehand. I deserve any and all criticism for the faulty "connections".

The intent was to have people see:
PAGE, ECON, ALARM, PORT and TEAM then see that adding HOME to those gave a possibility of a new word.
                    HOME PAGE = START
                    HOME ECON = LATIN
                    HOME ALARM = IDEA
                    HOPE PORT = DUTY station
                    HOME TEAM = EAGLES
The first letters of the alternates spelled SLIDE

AHA! Thanks for the nudge. I needed a change in direction but at least my initial wild guess TAG UP was in the right sport. Thanks for a fun challenge.

Hmm, I could have used that as an answer...almost sorry I didn't, but glad you made it to Home!

Ahh.. I used a right alternate for the wrong match. Makes sense! BTW .. Norfolk holds a fond memory for me: hubs was finishing up his engineering degree at ODU when we were dating and got engaged, so I took many road trips there that spring (1983)!

Finally got it, but needed all the nudges and a couple of extra ones from the good Doctor. Sometimes you see them, and sometimes you don't. Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!
