Great puzzle - thanks, Jay. As Tom said, it took me back to my grade school days. All my musical "knowledge" comes from learning to play the flutophone
No, I get it. The EVERY GOOD BOY DOES FINE is the mnemonic for the notes on the lines of the G Clef (which is hinted at in a clue) so the answer is a Clef and a five letter word for a clef is a STAFF. So I get it. It just feels somewhat anti-climatic.
But that is more than made up for by the excellence of the grid and the clue and the pleasure of the grid.
Nice, but perhaps too easy to guess based on the title and prompt without solving the puzzle

While we think we did fine we really feel that we deserve fudge!

Got the mechanism fairly quickly but then had a mental block over STAFF, just couldn't remember the term. After a few wrong tried, I asked my non-solver wife, who's my meta lifeline, and she came up with the answer right away after I outlined the steps. Clever - without being complex (a relief after viewing this week's MGWCC).

Credit to Mom, who was a piano teacher, for getting this one.
Wonder if "Every Good Boy Does Fine / Good Boys Do Fine Always" have changed over the years?
Thanks for the puzzle, Jay - you are always upscale and upbeat!

That was the mnemonic I learned when I was taking piano lessons in elementary school. But I can't remember the one for the bass clef!

"Fixing A Hole", "I've Just Seen A Face", "For Emily Whenever I May Find Her" - reasons enough to rate this one 5 Stars!

It goes before Descartes? brill. Was that an original? cuz I love it.
I guessed “staff” early on, from the title and all the music-theme entries, but needed the nudge because all I was seeing was the weird patterns of same letters (g’s and o’s in googoodolls, e’s and s’s in tresses…). Fun puzzle!

Wow. Not a music guy, but familiar with EGBDF mnemonic and saw it in the themers easily without nudges. But then my lack of musical knowledge caught up to me. Guessed Scale, guessed score, before getting staff. Difficulty level: 2.
