Sneaky Six #2: Like a Bridge (Over Troubled Waters)

· By Aaron Riccio · Published 2024-01-08T02:52:04.583Z

Constructor's Note
I figured the best way to test out an indicator I've been iffy on is to try using it.

I honestly didn't get some of these clues. Not sure what the indicator in question is, either, except noticing "use only end or middle letters" cropping up

Across and over were the "Bridge" indicators I was playing with. Not sure which end/middle ones you're thinking of, but I hope the annotations help!

I hope these annotations help, always happy to talk through anything still confusing.

          Thanks for a great puzzle.
3D What a lovely piece of misdirection!
          I also liked 1D and 4A.
2D Many UK solvers would not understand the sporting term "blitz".
5A I didn't see that "happening" as a synonym for "chic". I'm too old!
1A I totally missed the reversal indicator! Solved by getting the crossing words and researching on Google. Great clue!

Very much appreciate you taking some time with this one. I did consider whether "blitz" was too US-centric, but I thought in the military sense (not that that's a great evocation), it might still be clear or at least inferable. Will definitely keep the US/UK splits in mind for future puzzles!

I'd have said the sms is over or around the chic or that it's mostly happening -in- the sms, but compared to you geniuses I know not... and I completely wof'd 2d... other than that 3d puzzle, sorry for dragging yall down

I agree. "Over" and "across" have been used incorrectly here.
              • Aaron Riccio constructor · 2024-01-11T00:15:49.347Z
I hesitate to label anything as "wrong," but those are specifically the two bridge indicators I was testing.
To me, X across/over Y suggests that the letters of X are spanning Y; they are found, literally "across" Y. This might not be the most common usage, but it seems defensible from a grammatical perspective. I'll keep in mind the muted response to them, thanks!

Yes, I'm probably being a bit harsh. I can definitely see what you're getting at.

No worries. I tried using them BECAUSE I was being harsh on them elsewhere. My whole goal is to really drill down into my personal preferences and have a fully defensible set of rules by the end of the year.
