  DOWN. 2D. Hidden in "tWO VENetian". 3D. "Republican" = R, after "new" = N, "first lady" = EVE. 4D. Reversal (turns up) of "pungent smell" = TANG. 5D. Homophone of "yours truly" = TUBER.
