Bird Blind

Meta Prompt
This is a meta puzzle. It has an answer.
Okay. The grid is kind of tough. I have more the usual number of "woozyisms" (cobbled multiword phrases with surreal clues to make the unnatural phrases have some logistical meaning) and more acronyms than I like. I did the grid before I had learned a few tricks.
The meta is... I don't know. I think the mechanism is hard but the pointers are easy. I realize the prompt is useless but the mechanism should provide all you need.
Anyway... it's about bird watching and who doesn't love bird watching? (Or at least pretend they appreciate it.)

Tough grid, but gettable meta, woozy. Hit me right in my ornithological wheelhouse!

Dipped into the NW of the grid just to get a taste (no time this morning) and that was enough to solve on a wing and a prayer. Thanks!

Lots of fun, which is what counts! (IMO)

I am an avid birder, so even though the grid was really tough, the aha was fun. Thanks!
