Got Hints?

· By Darth · Published 2024-09-29T11:00:15.391Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is an Academy Award-winning movie.
The title of this puzzle is reminiscent of the famous “Got Milk?” ad campaign, which spanned over two decades (from 1993 until 2014) and featured an array of celebrities from Britney Spears, Kate Moss, and Whoopi Goldberg to David Beckham, the Back Street Boys, and Kermit the Frog -- all wearing their milk mustaches in support of drinking milk. In 2020, MilkPEP revived the "Got Milk?" campaign for a short time in a new fashion using Tik Tok challenges and Katie Ledecky swimming the length of an Olympic-size pool with a glass of milk on her head.
While this puzzle has nothing to do with milk, hopefully you'll find the same spirit of fun in solving the meta, the answer to which is an Academy Award-winning movie. Enjoy!...
And if you need some nudges, I've got hints for you!
Hint #1: Do you notice any similarities in the four themers and the puzzle title? .....
Hint #2: You'll see some common letters. Look closely -- there are more than two.
Hint #3: It can help to write out the pattern you see! There are two possible answers.
Hint #4: A "popular" answer may be argued for based on a central clue AND the "intended" one which follows a tighter pattern.

My first guess was "Grand Hotel"!
    • Darth constructor · 2024-09-29T15:23:58.104Z
Ahhh... That would seem to work, but of course you needed "G and HI" :D
      • KayW 🤓5:06 · 2024-09-29T18:07:27.771Z
I ALMOST entered that as well. But decided to review a list of all winners first. Well done! That movie didn't come to mind but when I saw it in the list, it clicked beautifully.

Stopped after a couple and went with Grand Hotel, needed a nudge to realize it was a single word answer!
          • Darth constructor · 2024-09-29T15:27:40.112Z
Hmm... Interesting choice, but it doesn't fit everything in common: G AND HI, right? ;-)
          • Bird Lives 5s · 2024-09-29T14:13:27.440Z
I saw the G HI, but only after I'd consulted the list did I realize that I shouldn't have had to. Nice one.

Solved, but only with a little further help from a kind Muggle and consuting Mr. G. Thanks for the puzzle, Darth!

I also tried Grand Hotel first and then it took the three hints to clarify it for me.

Haha. Yep, the expected pattern I had hoped would emerge was X and Yz ... "G and Hi" (and it's all spelled out). Thanks for solving, Laura! :D

Sorry for the choppy waters... This wasn't originally intended as an SSS, but since it's the end of the month, let's call it a Week 5 level. ;D Thanks for hanging in there!

We also wanted Grand Hotel. Especially considering the center clue, which started with "Glass-roofed Hilton"
                              • Darth constructor · 2024-09-30T01:05:50.900Z
I feel you. That does seem a bit misleading, but in my mind I was just going for another "G and Hi" pattern. ;)
                              • DrTom 7s · 2024-09-29T20:14:21.796Z
Wow, long way round for this one. At first I got GH and 40A with the same G H and mentioned the atrium for the Hilton which is mainly in their bigger hotels. So I decided that if "I want to be alone" was good enough for Garbo it was good enough for me - GRAND HOTEL (1932 Best Picture)...NOPE. OK then what do we have in common, GH, actually no GHI, so GHI GHI GHI GHI...AHA of course GIGI (1958 Best Picture)...well I can't spell that or sound that any differently??? I mean G and HI...hey, wait a darn minute GANDHI (1982 Best Picture)! Well, third times the charm.
                                • Darth constructor · 2024-09-30T01:16:29.568Z
Oh, dear. Where is that Xword Rabbit?... I understand how Grand Hotel became such a popular answer now. It was an odd coincidence (and quite comical really). Glass-roofed Hilton was just another "G and Hi" pattern. ...Then, of course, that 1958 Best Picture, too! I think "Ghi-Ghi" was the Bollywood remake of it! haha Well, thanks for hanging in, DrT!
                                • HeadinHome 🤓4:38 · 2024-09-30T02:50:43.648Z
Same as most: Grand Hotel (surprised when it failed), then GHANDI (spelling counts!) … GANDHI, of course!
                                  • Darth constructor · 2024-09-30T12:25:08.973Z
Lol. I should probably just allow Grand Hotel. It really does fit most of the pattern. ... But NOW whenever you need to spell Gandhi, you will remember this meta and the mnemonic: G and H I Thanks for solving, Wendy! :D

Nice meta. I got sidetracked by the fact that all of the themers also have an "e" between the "g" and the "hi", so I was looking for a movie that fit "g_e_hi_". But as soon as I saw Gandhi in the list it made sense.
