PCC#6 "When One of Us Shines, All of Us Shine"

Meta Prompt
[Level 1] Meta prompt: The answer to the meta is a #1 song from the 1980s that would make an apt title for this puzzle
Note: Googling is encouraged as there are a lot of names in this puzzle - I apologize for the subpar fill... hope the payoff is worth it!
Hint #1: some solvers love them, some solvers hate them... rebus squares! but these aren't just ordinary rebuses
Hint #2: the rebus squares are bidirectional and contain characters from a TV show as well as a part of a plant
Hint #3: what is the shared surname of the TV show characters? (not the surname of the actors)
Hint #4: the band's name of the meta answer song is the answer to 41-Down

    So fun!

thank you for solving :)... i had this puzzle in reserve for a while (originally slotted it as a themed puzzle with the meta answer as the title, but figured i could retrofit or tweak most of my themed puzzles as metas by just adding a prompt)

I feel A Chorus Line coming on....

i love your chorus line series! i'm using it as inspiration for a future meta

I am so excited for this!

Loved the puzzle! (My wife is a big fan of the show so that helped me not be totally confused… it's always rough when 1A doesn't register!) And I even got to the meta (the prompt should have been enough, but did make use of a hint!)

thanks! my biggest concern was that either the show or the song would not be familiar enough... so i prefaced with "googling is encouraged"... it's a fun show... the title "when one of us shines, we all shine" is a quotable line from Moira in the show. I wanted to add an "Ew, David!" reference somewhere in the puzzle since that's much more iconic but figured repeating David again would look weird

i was stymied by the rebus squares and did not know what to put in them (was it just one of the names? i put full "names")
thanks for putting in the show references, otherwise i would have been up schitt's creek without a paddle
          • Philip Chow constructor · 2023-09-03T18:38:20.534Z
that's a good point about how to enter the rebus squares... were you trying to put "ALEXIS/THORN" in the top left rebus? Crosshare doesn't support the slash (which i wanted to include) so i went with just having one directions for the solution (either the ROSE name or the THORN)... i'm going to go back and add ALEXISTHORN and THORNALEXIS as alt solutions in case anyone tries them... they look a bit clunky jamming it all into one square but it does illustrate the title much better - thank you for the feedback and for solving!

for the record i put eg ALEXISTHORN
