I got confused by 17A. AFAICT, Purdue Airport is indeed the second busiest airport, but Lafayette is nowhere close to the second biggest city in Indiana. It really threw me off because I knew Fort Wayne is the second largest city.
Teaches me to trust Wikipedia without verifying! Sorry it made you … puzzled. Given your Indiana experience, would you be able to suggest an alternative clue? "IATA code for Purdue University Airport in Indiana, named for another Indiana city"?
Purdue University is in West Lafayette, so you I think you can probably end it with "named for its city", I think. And FWIW, there's got to be someone around here who knows Indiana better than I do. I haven't lived there since I was a toddler!
Tough but very good! You probably know this, but the only reference to LAF as an answer in NYT is from 1987 Sunday puzzle with clue "The "We are here" gen." Better story behind it, but not much better than an IATA code for a crossword, right?
I did see that, but figured this angle might have been a bit more accessible. In retrospect, something like "Ingredient in both pi___ and fa___el?" would have been better still. The grid was very constrained, and this is the glue I accepted!
