            First "nudge" not "prompt" - guess I still have some cobwebs hanging around...

              Solved after the first prompt shook the cobwebs from my brain. Actually, shouldn't have needed the first prompt, as it just reminded me to focus on the title. Then when I saw HEAD and PAIL (which is one letter off from TAIL) at the opposite corners of the grid, I knew what was happening, and the rest fell into place very quickly. Nice variation on an old theme that hasn't been played for a while.
