Couple of tricky spots (though I'm admittedly a novice), certainly had to mull over a couple suffixes and dated vocabulary. I enjoy that, though - like hitting a muscle at the gym that hasn't gotten a workout in a while - ha. Thanks for the puzzle!

      Amazing clues!

Loved it! But the poison in apple seeds is cyanide rather than arsenic.

Thankyou! My misremembering slipped through test solving too - fixed now 😊

          Cool theme - thanks kieran!

I'm feeling very dense. I don't get what "drought" has to do with the starred clues. Can someone explain?
                • kieranjboyd constructor · 2023-11-19T01:12:48.835Z
Absolutely! In each of the starred clues, the entry clued before the arrow loses the letters RAIN, resulting in the grid entries clued by the second halves: RESTRAINING ➜ RESTING9AStopping ➜ Stopping *[-------]; TRAINED ➜ TED11AWorked with coach Lasso, for example ➜ Coach Lasso, for example *[---]; FEATHER-BRAINED ➜ FEATHERBED17ALike a silly goose ➜ Sleeping spot that might be made of goose parts *[----------]; RAINBOW CHASERS ➜ BOW CHASERS; RAIN MAN33ADustin Hoffman film ➜ Dustin Hoffman, for one *[---]MAN33ADustin Hoffman film ➜ Dustin Hoffman, for one *[---]. The title is also affected: Rainout ➜ Out. Hope that helps!

Ah! I get it now. Thanks for explaining.

I solved the whole thing and I don't fully get it either! The entry that gave me some insight was 33A33ADustin Hoffman film ➜ Dustin Hoffman, for one *[---]: "Rain Man" is the film, and with the water removed (here, RAIN) it becomes just MAN33ADustin Hoffman film ➜ Dustin Hoffman, for one *[---], which fits the second half of the clue. But I couldn't figure out the other theme entries, so I'd appreciate the explainer too!

Thanks for making it but a lot of the hints are wrong or don't make sense.
