        The base puzzle was a fun solve! I have no idea how the meta works — even after seeing revealing the answer — so an explanation (or a series of nudges) would be appreciated!

          I'm not sure I'm good at hinting, but hopefully these help!
          1. There are 7 entries used in the meta.
          2. Each of the 7 entries has a year in parentheses and a number in square brackets. The number is used for ordering.
          3. Consider the title in combination with the theme, and the years.
          4. The answer to the meta has been lost. Each of the entries has lost something as well. The year can help you find it.
          5. Each meta entry is the title of a classic video game (yes Dead Space counts as a classic fight me) with a missing letter.
          Answer: Concatenating the missing letters in order gives the phrase THE GAME, which is another classic "game"/meme. Also, I just lost The Game.
