Right Between The Eyes (Meta)

◆◆ · By benchen71 · Published 2022-02-01T05:00:36.285Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a type of punch
This might be a tricky grid, but keep persevering because the meta mechanism should hit you right between the eyes, revealing the answer which is a type of punch. Good luck! Answer and explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=81820#p81820
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

Would've guessed CENTER, so not a gridless solve for me. Thanks!

You weren't kidding about the grid! I couldn't even Google 15A and 7D. But the mechanism was exactly what I thought it would be :-) Fun one, thanks!

Tough grid (in places). Similar to the "Solecism" puzzle from last week (WSJCC You Don't Say). Thanks for the entertainment, Ben.

I constructed this grid ages ago (it's actually a very early puzzle) and had it scheduled for this week - and then the WSJ ran "You Don't Say" with a very similar meta mechanic. I figured I would run mine anyway. It's supposed to be an easy "week 1" puzzle, after all!

Nice one - agreed that the grid was very tricky but a nice simple meta

Still works as something you say when you make your winning move. Or am I missing something?

58D (IWIN) and 29D (ICHBIN) both have letters between the Is

I didn't think of that. I'm going to get around that awkward discovery by saying this was a meta where 3 of the 4 long entries are involved in the meta, and the 4th long entry is a clue. ;-)

Easy enough meta, although I had to finish the grid before getting it!!

Knew the meta mechanism before I started the grid; knew the answer before I finished the grid; worked HARD to solve the grid. Satisfying puzzle, thanks.

This is actually one of my early puzzles, which explains why the grid is so tough. I've spent a lot more time on my more recent grids endeavouring to make them easier!

Tough grid + easy meta mechanism is teh bee's knees for me... a long-time xword solver who's new to meta puzzles. Any time I solve a meta -- which is relatively rate, to be honest -- is a confidence builder for me.
