Nice one - feel like I'm seeing double (defs)! Only two questions - does Moana translate to SEA or something? I didn't quite get that. And how does AROSE work for surface? Maybe for surfaced like rose out of the water, but wouldn't the tense be incorrect as clued?

      You were indeed :)
Moana is a Māori word that's slipped into the English lexicon (much like any word of French origin e.g. beige)
Nice catch wrt arose, I'll need to tidy that up. I had some busy meetings yesterday, so didn't check this as thoroughly as I normally do.

Ah thanks for the explanations! And glad I wasn't imagining things 😂

7A appeals to my rock climber self for sure. What’s your general opinion on ddefs where both defs have the same etymology? I was taught that these were non-kosher, but that might just be a regional thing.

Haha yea, 7A was a new def for me; but definitely one of those things that I felt would resonate to some.
I'm not enamoured by similar roots, but I believe they're only really looked down upon in US cryptics. I dunno, I've had a very lax education on the finder points of setting

Ah, that would explain it. Defs more influenced by the Americans here in Canada.
A pleasant puzzle either way. Thanks!
