  Solve path: Four pairs of intersecting words are important: (VENUS/EARTH, INDEX/PINKY, AFRICA/EUROPE, THYME/PARSLEY). Per the title, think of members of the same sets (planets, fingers, continents, herbs mentioned in Scarborough Fair). Each set has exactly one member with four letters: MARS, RING, ASIA, SAGE. These can be arranged into the word square at the right.

  As a math teacher, I couldn't resist the title. Cool puzzle, especially for those of us who are into metas.

  I solved the left side so quickly, I didn't see all the down clue answers, so my brain didn't immediately make the necessary connections. For instance, I didn't have to solve EARTH, EUROPE or INDEX. Those got filled in while doing the acrosses, then the downs. Because the cursor jumps to the next empty square, it skipped lots of words.
