Cryptic #11 - Call Me Maybe

· By jasonwestley · Published 9 months ago

Constructor's Note
This is an unthemed cryptic, the first I've written for quite a while. The title is not a hint to anything!

Very much enjoyed this one (though I must admit I don't quite get 12A
12ASmall detective expelled from religious ceremony (6)[------]
      !). Never seen a clue like 5D
5DWendy and friends share this conclusion (3)[---]
      before. Great stuff, thanks.

I think small is S, detective is PI, which you remove from spiritual (religious).

Thanks Dorian! I was quite pleased with 5D
5DWendy and friends share this conclusion (3)[---]
. I also hadn't seen a clue construction like that before, although it wasn't particularly challenging I don't think.

Great word choices for all those 11s, and the surfaces were very clean. I enjoyed “reproduced” in 3D
3D"King William the Third", by Ernst originally, reproduced for German expressionist (4)[----]
        , 5D
5DWendy and friends share this conclusion (3)[---]
was cute (I have seen it before, but very rarely), the repeated “I” structure of 13A
13AI came, according to Caesar; I moved back in narrow vessel (4)[----]
        made me chuckle, and 1A
1ADad is hiding, feeling worse after tattoos and drugs (11)[-----------]
        , 7A
7ANot the greatest reward for running devil's realm chaotically? (6,5)[-----------]
        , and 9A
9AWorking solo, read aloud, but not in the library (2,4)[------]
are my favorites. I got 9A
9AWorking solo, read aloud, but not in the library (2,4)[------]
for the wrong reason, missing the double deletion, and I didn’t know 14D
14DTo her audience, "Call Me Maybe" singer is a goddess (4)[----]
was pronounced that way (or maybe I just misparsed it)!

Thanks for the extensive feedback Aaron. Much appreciated. I think 14D
14DTo her audience, "Call Me Maybe" singer is a goddess (4)[----]
is fine in a British accent, but I'm not sure how well it works in others!
