Rethinking Inside the Box

· By sus · Published 2022-04-23T16:23:28.428Z

This is a polished remake of a cryptic by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon, which appeared in the Wall Street Journal last year. The instructions are as follows:
When all clue answers are entered in the grid, the inner box will be surrounded by 16 different letters of the alphabet. Use the remaining 10 letters of the alphabet to construct a three-by-three crossword for that inner box—with a pair of letters occupying the central square.
(Alternatively, you may fill the box with X's if you wish to skip the final step.)

Excellent puzzle. You might want to be a bit clearer about the box fill. I spent a little while trying to fill the box with 3-letter words where the middle box was either/or, e.g. SLY/STY and ALE/ATE. I eventually worked out it was impossible, so the solve had to be 4-letter words in the middle column and row! Had fun working it all out though!
