Meta Prompt
You'll see the answer if you look beyond the surface and reflect
Not sure from what depths of metaphysical posings (or is that posturings) this evolved but here it is. I think this was one that came to me in while sitting in Church, or perhaps at a redlight, and then it was a "wonder of there is enough for a meta. Turns out there was/is and I hope people will enjoy it. It might be a tad more difficult, but not for this group of super sleuths. Still I'll give it a Persian and be glad if people tell me later, "Hey Tom that was at best a Calico!"
My testers were whimsy and benchen, though they did this so long ago that it will probably seem like a new puzzle. I will be providing Friday nudges and anytime help via PM

I would say that Calico is correct.

          "Mrow!" I'd tend to agree.

Got step 1 fairly quickly, but then hit a brick wall. And then I remembered the cardinal rule of Dr. Tom puzzles -- always look at the clues. Thanks for the puzzle!

Ooh, the place to find pigeons? Well, First guess was STOOL so BARSTOOL immediately after was an amusing red herring, but unfortunately it was all tail and no head.

Thanks for the clue comment. I intuited Lamina from the prompt after finding all the animals. Nice to go back and find an additional (better) reason.

Darn, I was hoping "surface" would not be too much of a hint/nudge, though in truth I'd say you will bein the minority on intuiting LAMINA and knowing that to reflect upon it means turning it around. When I began I was hoping opt have things that actually were a mirror reflection but there are too few letters (A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, and Y) that have vertical symmetry. So I settled for hetero-palindromes (or rather my favorite term for them semordnilaps)

Knew when I saw the title, I'd like it.
Calico. Did require a mechanism I only prefer in extreme circumstances or with some eluded to trigger (but in this case it was more a case of "where else?" so all's good). Could be harder with a different title but I wouldn't have love it as much under a different name (I'm fickle that way.)

Whew! -- almost couldn't get it the second time -- embarrassing! Remembered about the creatures but almost neglected to include the little 3-letter aminals on the sides. Liked it back when; like it now!

What MatthewL said. Got the retrofauna quickly, but didn't think to look at the clues till I'd come back to it after a few hours.

Had to reveal puzzle to get the 3rd letter of DEET. I had DEBT, not knowing what the heck “off” in OFF meant… figured it was some abbreviation I didn’t know, so B made DEBT, which made BARS for 3 down, a place where you will find buds (as in, Bud Lights, ODouls, etc!). ANYhoo, this was cute. WOLF was my tip off, thinking your “surface” referred to the edges of the puzzle, so I looked at the words on the edges that could be read backwards. Fun to search for all of them… I bet it was fun to think of them too!
