Name-Dropping

· Di Bird Lives · Pubblicato 2024-09-09T11:14:51.269Z

Meta Prompt
The answer is a TV personality.
|Nudge 1 Five symmetrically placed entries are the surnames of people in the arts. Each clue for these cites one or more ore of their contributions in their respective fields.
Nudge 2 Those are their surnames. But what are their given names? You might not know. But you probably do know what they use in place of given names. (That’s the idea behind the title of this puzzle.)
Nudge 3 What to do with these substitutes for the dropped names?
Nudge 4 Look for them elsewhere in the grid. You won’t find them together. Instead they will be sandwiching other letters.
Nudge 5 All you need to do now is to string those sandwiched letters together.

    Good one, Bird!

That was great! Really liked this. Had the same reaction as BarbaraK when I finally found it. Thanks for the puzzle, Jay!

Fun! Not seen this exact meta before, but saw it pretty quickly. Thank you.

Had a little trouble because I had imposed upon myself a couple of restrictions that weren't intended by the puzzle setter, such as:
                  • the word with the initials had to be a Down entry
                  • the word with the initials had to have four letters
Once I got past that, smooth sailing!

I think there is an extraneous "a" in the clue for 5A. That had me looking for more instances like that to "drop" as I was filling the grid. Fortuantely, e.e. cummings, a favorite came along quickly which set me on a better path.
I was REALLY trying to find a four letter word for E G, but finally went with ENG and "there it was".

Cool puzzle! And hey who's that in 57A? 😃 (My main instrument is actually the flute, although funnily enough I did play the OBOE (rather mediocrely) for a few years in high school!)

Oops. Your fellow Ohioan Joe mentioned it one time, and obviously I remembered incorrectly. I'll get it right next time.

Very nicely done. Had a brief hesitation about whether to use GAYE, but figured there had to be an ExG in the right order somewhere. Speedy and fun, and very clever connection to the answer. Thanks. :)

Very nice; thanks, Jay! And I'm pretty sure Letter Man is one of the regulars on Sesame Street. 😄

I took a stab yesterday. (Quite frankly, I can’t remember how I came up w/ my initial answer) Duties called so I had to leave it until this morning. Saw it right away. Good job, Jay!

Spent a little time looking for a R..M word (RM Nixon)… not that anyone EVER calls him that. Or H.C. Lodge either. This was fun to figure out! I initially thought you’d go with names dropping down, like NERO in ONEROUS, but that dried up pretty quickly. Thanks for the fun hunt!

I got sooo locked int othe right, but wrong, Mx. I was looking at words with the letters TOGETHER, so IMAM, ELEM (but also ATEM), DEEP, LEGUME... I had nothing for Rowling and saw JERK which SHOULD have alerted me but did not. Nice job Jay, love the internal tightness even if the fill was a challenge (did not need Google but crosses and intuition helped). Thanks for the puzzle

I got the sandwiched letters right away before nudges and stared at TTLEMAERN and dismissed as nonsense. Needed the final nudge to know that it wasn’t nonsense after all! Clever puzzle! Thanks!

Needed a nudge to confirm the path, but very clever mechanism, Jay!
