Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a name
As you will soon find out when you dive into this puzzle, I was working on this meta late on a Friday afternoon/evening and I think it shows: some of the clues are on the chatty side and I really let my punctuation slide. Let me say right at the outset that the metanism is not in the clues! Hopefully you will enjoy this puzzle as much as I enjoyed the G & T I had as I was constructing it. The answer to the meta is a name.
Plus, for the first time ever for a MOAT, there's a prize! The randomly-drawn name will win a MOAT Music Meta Pack valued at $US10. (If that randomly-drawn name is someone who already purchased the Pack, then they can nominate someone else to receive their prize.) Answer & explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=139371#p139371
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

This would have read slightly better with "in" instead of "is"!

Really enjoyed this puzzle, Ben...would have loved to have joined you in a G & T while filling in the grid and reading your wonderful clues, but couldn't wait to solve. Thanks!

If this is the secret to good puzzles, maybe I should get into gin & tonics... I dont think my gout will like that tho...
I first got sidetracked when I saw ERIC was one letter off from BRIC... once I found my liege lord, I knew I was on the true path
You puzzle geniuses are kings among men sorry for the inconvenience of trying to meddle where I dont belong

I did the same thing with BRIC and I played Nimue in high school.

There should always be a hint! If there is no additional hint in the grid, and the puzzle title is all you've got, then it's always worth thinking about different ways of interpreting the puzzle title.

Ahhh that’s what I was missing. I caught on to the kings, but I thought maybe the VI was just misdirection.

Glad I thought what the title might mean right away. Sometimes those spanning words are so hard to find.
                      • DrTom 3s · 2023-08-15T15:23:07.041Z
Very nice. When I started I said "Val Halla!" there is an in with BRIC, but to be correct it would have had to be BRIK and change a letter. Then I saw NIMROD, and I searched and of course he was not a Viking. Soon after I spotted ARTHUR and later AHAB..."but those were not Vikings I told myself, they were Kings; DUH wait a minute I'll bet there are 6 (or VI) Kings. Love the Viking twist at the end. Nice puzzle Ben, though my eyes were Thor after all that reading. I suppose I'll just keep the puzzle as part of a reference library, what is the Dewey Decimal System number for that?😂
Oh, and anchovies should only be used for Pasta alla puttanesca and Caesar salad, anything else seems fishy to me.
                        • whimsy 18:32 · 2023-08-15T15:53:42.415Z
I actually found NIMROD first followed by RAMSES and AHAB (Puzzled out that the entries might run into each other because of the clues being so run on, so there is that to be said for the clues.) I tried to find other Biblical Kings, figuring they'd be from the King James >VI< Bible. And then maybe somehow that subconsciously put me in mind of English kings -- and I suddenly saw RICHARD, then ARTHUR. So the GEORGE was easy since I knew I wanted a G -- from all that earlier googling of Norsemen! :-) Six (VI) kings in total!

I actually thought GEORGE would be the easiest to spot!
                            • ChrisCross 🤓10:59 · 2023-08-16T19:32:50.438Z
I found George first. Nimrod was second and that’s what made me realize it was kings.
                            • woozy 3:26:28 · 2023-08-16T00:29:01.211Z
Hmmm, GEORGE, RICHARD, and ARTHUR were my first. I figured NIMROD was probably me just doing wishful thinking. But googling confirmed Nimrod was okay (although it seemed like a huge jump from european kings) and I figured symmetry was likely and saw AHAB. Had to look long and hard to get RAMSES finally.
This is "Head out on the Road" all over again. Along with "Look Both Ways" (which I still haven't solved) are all the metas going to go this way for me this week?

My inroad was VI-kings… “six kings, I thought” (cuz who in the world knows six famous Vikings?? Life Erickson and Erik the Red are about all I could come up with). And prolly lots of Olafs and other odd names. So I went hunting for kings and saw GE-ORGE right away, then AH-AB… and the rest fell like gin-soaked fools. ( : Fun cluing, even if it did increase the grid-solving time.

After seeing lots of nothing for a while, I finally spotted GEORGE. But wait. He's not a viking. And then RICHARD and NIMROD et al. It took me a while to realize they weren't VIKINGS, they were (vi)KINGS. And I must admit I was daunted when I saw all that cluing - but it was all very readable and entertaining. Thanks, Ben!

Finally got it with a little assist. Should've known to read the title more carefully. Loved the stream of consciousness clues. Especially liked the Perry the Platypus shoutout. Saw way too many Phineas and Ferb episodes as my kids were growing up. One of the few kid shows that I actually could watch and get a chuckle out of. Your nudges mostly confirmed the rabbit hole I was already asphyxiating in… I had the notion of 6 kings, but was phyxiating on BB KING (from ABBEY), but nothing further. No MLK, no DON, no STEPHEN… Final nudge triggered a swift path to the answer.

Fun one. Needed all the nudges, partly because my biblical knowledge is near zero. Mostly because I was too dumb to decipher the title properly though. :) Ironically I spent some time looking for the meta answer in the grid early on (as I'm sure did others), and also spent a fair amount of time thinking that SAGEOR was pretty close to GEORGE. But never would have gotten there on my own. My fault, not the puzzles's! Thanks.
