PCC#22 "Wandering in Hundred and One Acre Wood"

· Por Philip Chow · Publicado 2024-01-13T15:58:12.488Z

Meta Prompt
[Level 2.5] Meta prompt: The answer to the meta is a plural noun for who museums might employ for special exhibitions
Hint #1: The meta answer is 9 letters long (and there are exactly 9 clues with asterisks)
Hint #2: 62-Across hints at anagrams... "Wandering" in the puzzle's title is another anagram indicator
Hint #3: "Hundred and One Acre Wood?!" I thought Pooh and his friends lived in Hundred Acre Wood... why is there a +1?
Hint #4: EYESORE almost looks like EEYORE
Hint #5: The +1 means an extra letter... Anagram the entries with asterisked clues to get a Pooh character plus an extra letter
Hint #6: Example: EYESORE = EEYORE + S... the extra letters in grid order spell out the answer (no need for a final anagram)

Answer explanation: The entries with the asterisked clues can be anagrammed to a "Winnie-the-Pooh" character plus an extra letter. They are (in grid order of extra letter appearance): TRIPLEG = PIGLET + R, OREO = ROO + E, SHORTCIPHERS = CHRISTOPHER + S, POOH = PHOTO + T, WOOL = OWL + O, TRIGGER = TIGGER + R, TABBIER = RABBIT + E, ANGKAR = KANGA + R, EYESORE = EEYORE + S... The extra letters spell out the meta answer RESTORERS... Back in 2016, the original Pooh toys underwent a restoration to be displayed at the NY Public Library.
Constructor notes: This puzzle was born when I thought that Eeyore looked like "eyesore"... from there I thought what if I could add a letter and unscramble the other Pooh characters into valid words... then I had to force a word with the limited possibility of extra letters and really had to reach out there to come up with a meta prompt that had any sort of relevancy to Pooh.
Winnie-the-Pooh Day is celebrated on January 18, the author A.A. Milne's birthday (01/18/1882). I'll leave you with two quotes misattributed to Milne: (1) On not being a selfish tool: "When carrying a jar of honey to give to a friend for his birthday, don't stop and eat it along the way." (2) On being yourself: "The things that make me different are the things that make me me."

Nice one, Phil! Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for the puzzle!

One of my favourites to read to my kids. Although I appreciate the humour so much more now that I did at their age! Fun puzzle, thank you!

Speaking of Museums trivia.... where can you go to see the original Winnie the Pooh toys on display?
Great puzzle! A favorite subject of mine. Nudges completely unneeded.

NY Public Library? or is that a temp location? I honestly didn't know about it until I was doing "research" for this puzzle and thought it was cute that the original toys got restored, but so sad that Roo was lost many years ago per this article: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/winnie-the-pooh-dolls-restored_n_57b4bba2e4b095b2f5422807

It's permanent. The toys were given to the publishers (sadly and unfortunately Christopher Robin Milne had negative associations with the toys and had no sentiment to them) and publishers donated them to NY Public Library and the are in the 42nd street branch (NOT the main branch with the stone lions [my second favorite trivia question: what are the stone lions names?]). I made a huge exodus to view them much to bewilderment of my associates ("You... went to New York just to see the Winnie the Pooh toys?" "Well, not just, but certainly if I'm in the city I'm going to make a trek for them of course!" "Um, really?" "Of course!!!!!")

Patience and Fortitude! I have a pair of P&F socks that I bought when I made the pilgrimage to the NYPL main branch a few years ago.

Have to confess, I was looking for a tenth WTP character at first; thought it might be a children's museum with a costumed character walking around high-fiving kids at a special WTP display. Then I realized, no, more universal; loved how all the trivia you shared fit in! And let it be known that I actually played Poohsticks on our walk earlier today!

A pleasure to solve. Well done, Phil - thanks! Funny - the name it took me longest to decrypt was PHOTO/POOH :D

lol - sometimes the obvious ones are the most well-hidden! I debated not including the asterisks to begin with to make the puzzle more challenging... didn't know how universal or cross-generational Pooh would be but it seems pretty timeless

Nice job of finding entries that could make these Pooh names work!

thanks chris! i cheated a lot... "short ciphers" is a made up term... "tabbier" isn't really a word (i had "bar bite" in an earlier version which is still contrived, but slightly less so)... and "angkar" is a WOE?!... i had "PREHISTORIC" for christopher in my first draft of the puzzle but failed to realize I left out the second H until I was done constructing the puzzle and had to scramble last minute to come up with a new meta prompt and new grid.

Great puzzle. I love that you post nudges so soon. Great for those of us who are busy and do a lot of these. Also a great feature for those new to metas.

yup! i made puzzles for my friends/family - many who are brand new to the meta-scene, so i don't want them to get frustrated for too long... but then there's really no leaderboard/point system... maybe i can employ the "Wordle" format... using no nudges = genius/hole-in-one!... using only 1 or 2 nudges = magnificent!... about 3-4 nudges = par... using all nudges = Phew! 😅

So much fun! My dad used to read to me from 61A all the time. I also am ashamed to admit that PHOTO/POOH was the hardest for me to spot!

This was fun. I've always loved Winnie the Pooh and all the characters. It was also nice to solve a meta without a nudge. Thanks, Phil!

Fun puzzle! I'm not an expert on the subject, but I recognized enough to see what was going on and google the others.
If my husband were a meta solver though, he'd have been totally lost. One time we walked into a Walmart and asked the greeter where to find something. She said, "Just walk down this aisle and turn left at Tigger and Pooh." I've never seen him looked so completely baffled.

This one was fun to do! The gears in my head started turning when I was staring at EYESORE and TRIGGER and remembering the theme title.
