It’s Wednesday and you know what that means!!! This was a puzzle made some time ago and tested by quite a few in its journey to the forum (mwoychick, Darth, rjy). I got the idea from another puzzle, or rather a word from another puzzle and an idea I had had 3 or 4 years ago and could not make work.
I am going to go out on a limb and give this one a hard Persian or Puma rating right off the bat. Please don’t be scared, it is only because it involves several deductive steps and has a rather subtle mechanism. This will be one of those you either see very early or need to wait for nudges or get assistance on. I say that because all of my solvers, after an initial struggle, said “Oh of course!!!”
So:
Kitten
Calico
Persian
֎ Puma
Lion
I will post Friday nudges unless they are needed earlier and will be available for questions/hints via PM
Nudges:
Nudge 1] Clue 1A should have alerted you to five things in the puzzle.
Nudge 2] What is another word for odors or aromas? Think of something a bloodhound might detect.
Nudge 3] Knowing the title does that give you any footholds?
Nudge 4] I said there was a twist or an interpretation made from what you have gotten. Is there a homonym at play?
Nudge 5] Any ideas what metal is used in many coins?
Might just as well reveal the answer] Isn't making coins also making money?
THE REVEAL:
This was a "multi-step" meta
(A) recognize that there were 5 different "smells" as hinted by clue 1A
1. PIZZA
2. BADEGG
3. WETDOG
4. ROSES
5. BREAD
(B) make the jump from smells to scents
(C) make the jump from scents to cents
(D) realize you had "5 cents"
(E) attach the meaning "nickel" to 5 cents
(F) realize that nickel is the most common metal in coins
(G) connect that nickel is used to make money [coins]
Giving you the meta answer - NICKEL
There were a lot of interesting answers, but a common one was MINT (easy to see why that might be a guess), INCENSE, SENSE and COMMON SENSE. They were all good and had I not spent a LOT of time trying to get the 5 SCENTS in there I might have accepted them. But you all know what a fan of word play I am and SCENTS - > CENTS and nickel (the coin) to NICKEL (the metal) was just too enticing to give up on.
