[Level 4] The answer to the meta is a noted historical figure.
Immediate nudges, if you want to take them! All three would take the meta down to a Level 2.5/3.
There are 9 symmetrical across entries relevant to solving this meta.
The first of them is 13-Across.
As always, keep the title in mind, with emphasis on the preposition.

Explanation: Nine symmetrically placed entries contain the name of a country with a letter inserted: MILANOS (LAOS; N), CUEBALL (CUBA; E), SIMPLERULE (PERU; L), CHILLED (CHILE; L), ARNIEPALMER (NEPAL; I), CHEADLE (CHAD; E), CYMBALISTS (MALI; B), TOOLMAN (OMAN; L), SPAYING (SPAIN; Y). The inserted letters spell NELLIE BLY, our famous historical globetrotter whose journey around the world concluded in 1890 on January 25, the same date as this puzzle's initial publication!

Nice straightforward meta - for me it was much easier than a week 4.
Solved without nudges. A fun gradual reveal. Thanks, Mikey!

Whoa, Nellie -- Good one! At first I though there might be more than one mechanism. One for the first name via the countries, and a second for the last name via cities: Milan, Edam, Palermo (?) Marietta. But then our girl on the scene came into focus. Thanks, Mikey!

Very nice. But gotta ask - were MILAN and MALI deliberate red herrings? Only got LAOS and BALI when back solving for the missing letters in _ELLIE_LY and realized that MILAN was actually LAOS and MALI was actually BALI.
hoover 2s · hace 4 meses
It actually is MALI. You need the B for BLY.
DebbieC 14:21 · hace 4 meses
Error on my part. Meant to write BALI was actually MALI.
Solved sans nudges. Not really a level 4 once you saw the first hidden place, mine was ARNIEPALMER because I was going for Italy (MILAN/ARNO etc) but then I saw NEPAL and looked at other symmetrical entries. Who would have thunk NELLIE BLY would show up twice in a week!
Fun trip!
I keep waiting for you to make a puzzle using Ice-T, Dr Dre, Lil NAS filled with puns, and you can call it Rap Punzzle - you could really let your hair down with that one!

Yep. I sure used the hints. Busy week. Thanks, Mikey!

Just now remembered to come here, and glad I did -- a MikeyG I could solve without much trouble except that the only Nellie Bly I knew of is the other one.
"I ain't gonna tell you no story // I ain't gonna tell you no lie.
That one.
You've also unknowingly put in tip-off to a themer in the next MMM.
