After Breakfast

· Por ajk · Publicado 2023-12-10T05:00:41.810Z

Meta Prompt
The meta answer is a common breakfast item
Happy Sunday. :)
This one popped into my head, unsurprisingly, while consuming the meta answer. 😂 There's not that much too it, but hopefully it will provide some Sunday morning entertainment.
Thanks to Abide and Wendy Walker for test solving, and for some design suggestions that removed some possible red herrings and some of the jungle covering the trailhead. 😂 Thanks to Joe Ross and MarkWoychick for tech support.
Nudges:
Some of the clues have something in common that might put you in mind of the title, at least generally
Breakfast usually contains food
Eight symmetrical acrosses all have food-related clues, and those are the only food-related clues in the puzzle (hence the more obscure clue for 20D)
The first word of the title is significant
Can you think of a word that might go 'after' the themers on the left? How about the ones on the right?
Part of 23A is an (admittedly unintentional) Easter egg that might point you toward the answer

Nice, thank you! Such a sense of deja vu -- maybe this popped up on crosshare in an earlier incarnation? Or maybe my brain is playing tricks on me again.

You're not dreaming! Originally this was going to run last week in a prior incarnation, and I forgot to turn off the publish timer when it got switch. Congrats on solving the harder one too. :)

Took a little longer for me as I’m not familiar with dishpan and oil pan. Grew up with washing-up bowl and sump respectively - but frying and Peter got me to the right place!!!

nice puzzle!! 🥞🥞🥞... frying was the first pan i saw and cheese was the first cake... then found the rest... was the STACK in substack intentional? it had me thinking about pancakes from the start lol...

LOL no it wasn't. Anything not one of the 8 was just 'thing that will not break the fill.' Can't believe I didn't see that. 😆

Nope, this one went over my tiny little head, so I had to resort to nudges... I actually did think of pancakes when reading 23a but thought the link was much too weak... I guess I did see the symmetric entries, but I kept seeing pairs (fruit cup, fish oil, etc), and in particular I could not see any way to make PETER abide by the theme... I also followed another rabbit hole when I saw a suspicious number of clues with the word common as in the prompt
Anyway thanks for the puzzle, gg to all you geniuses who solved it on your own, ill keep trying and failing to match wits with yall... sorry in advance for the inconvenience

Ack, sorry again for the excessive use of 'common' in the clues. Apparently that's just a style preference of mine (which I didn't even know about). :) But glad you got there in the end. :)

Got it on my first guess… but it was definitely more of an impressionistic solution (leaning heavily on the prompt). I now see the entries that connect to the PAN and the CAKE parts but think I could use more of a spell-it-out!

I needed the nudges, though I was going to submit PANCAKE simply on the subSTACK. I saw the food references but got hung up on CARAMELS because I was wondering "Are there 10 themers?" So I tried adding BREAKFAST (BREAKFAST DISH = EGGS, BREAKFAST FRUIT = GRAPEFRUIT. BREAKFAST FISH=KIPPERS), then I saw RAFT and TOES, well "Adam and Eve on a Raft" is two eggs on toast, and TOES well that is a TOAST homonym. I was all over but never thought to add a word to each side. Nice Sunday challenge Alan.
