The City & the City (Meta)

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is a fictional city
"The City & the City" (by 38 across) is a brilliant mind-melting weird-fiction detective/police-procedural novel. (It was also made into a BBC TV series, which while decent, paled in comparison.) Such a book deserves a similarly mind-melting meta! I think the major challenge here will be completing the grid; the meta should follow on pretty quickly after that. The answer you are looking for is a fictional city. Good luck! Answer & explanation here: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=105007#p105007
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

Pretty cool but a lot of work! Even after liberal Googling I still had to use the check function to find out that I still had 4 or 5 wrong letters in the grid :-) Thanks for the puzzle, and I'm putting the book on my reading list!

The book is amazing! I sort of knew the grid would be difficult.
    • rjy 4s · 2022-08-30T15:11:58.530Z
Yes, very tough grid, particularly with missing letters that made the crossings very difficult. I had several letters wrong and had to peek to figure them out. Still... not a complaint! I think tough ones like this should be among the mix, and appreciate the creativity... thanks Ben!

They're not everyone's cup of tea. But, as you say, there should be the occasional tough meta. Emphasis on "occasional"!
      • Cindy Heisler 2s · 2022-08-30T15:41:09.854Z
Tough grid. The meta would have been easier if all my grid answers were correct. My bad!

Very challenging grid, but the payoff was worth it...didn't know the book but will definitely check it out...thanks Ben!

It's a great book. And when you read it, you will appreciate this meta puzzle even more!

Didn't do too bad on the grid considering I don't seem to share a lot of Ben's interests. : ) Did do a considerable amount of checking to make sure I wasn't going off the track. A nice challenge -- Thanks, Ben!

Tricky grid ( like you said) but the path to the meta was pretty clear! Will have to check out the book! Thank you!

I like a challenging grid, but this was the wrong sort of tough for my taste.

I knew this meta puzzle would be extremely niche: it's basically a meta for people who have read "The City & the City"!

Okay... I'm going to have to read that book.
                  Fun puzzle.

It's one that stuck in my mind for a long time afterwards.

I echo what many have said. Had several mistakes on the crosses which made this even harder. May have to read the book! Thanks for the challenge.

I thought there was a step 2 until I gave up and googled “orciny”. ;) fun puzzle!

Wow - kind of an impossible grid (did Josh help you with that?) but the mechanism was simple once you caught on. Thanks Ben
                          • ReB 33:44 · 2022-09-02T03:04:02.917Z
Grid was very challenging and needed the check function. Then, once I took another look at the title and realized that there should be two cities intermixed in each theme answer, everything quickly fell into place. And when I googled the answer for confirmation, I found that indeed the answer as I anticipated was one of the two cities in the referenced book. I guess I'll learn the name of the other city if I read the book. (No, didn't google the book title.)
Worth the effort. Very well plotted out.

Nice touch in the middle, after googling the book author.

Struggled a lot to get the letters of the city in the right order- not sure if I missed part of the mechanism? Found the 6 letters pretty easily, though. Good puzzle!
                                • benchen71 constructor · 2022-09-05T21:57:57.823Z
The letters of each city are in order, but there is no pattern as to which city's letter comes next other than trying to make the end result vaguely pronounceable.
                                  • kurtalert 14:42 · 2022-09-07T14:51:43.995Z
Sorry- by "the city" - I meant the meta answer... I easily found the real city names and knew which letter was missing from each combination, but once I had ICONRY I wasn't able to sort those letters properly. I only figured it out by looking up that book and seeing that there was a city in it with those same 6 letters!

Oh, that's when the numbers in brackets in the clues comes into it.
