All or Nothing

Meta Prompt
The entry you were sure you'd find but didn't
This rather describes my meta experiences; it is all or nothing. I can either see them almost within the first hour or so of completing the grid, or struggle with them until I have to yell "Uncle". Hopefully this one will be a quick trip and I'll get a LOT more Alls than Nothings. If forced to rate it I would give it a 2-3 only because it is one where you infer, as opposed to spell out, the answer.

I thank my testers eisense and HeadinHome. It has been so long they probably have forgotten about it - good two more possible solvers!!
Hmmm, playing much harder than expected.
Nudges:
Nudge 1] There are 9 things in the Grid that share a single characteristic.
Nudge 2] Those "things" are symmetrically placed.
Nudge 3] The "double cross" clue crosses two of them.
Nudge 4] You do crosswords all the time, what favorite word in that same class is missing?
Reveal:
There were 9 symmetrically placed answers:
FACT
PANDA
OLDPHOTOS
COPCAR
HABIT
YINYANG
ZEBRA
ORCA
All of those things are black and white (the presence of all or absence of all color). HOWEVER, one very common black and white object, and almost a standard in crosswords, is missing! OREO! As it turns out, OREO is the single most used brand name (used almost 3000 times) in the NY Times puzzles.
The nudge clue, 35D “A nudge in a meta predicated on a double cross” actually turned out to be a double nudge. The answer “crossed” TWO of the B&W things in an effort to call attention to them as part of the mechanism. However, what I did not recognize is that the front of every Oreo had a “Cross of Lorraine” – a double cross.

Nice one, Tom. I very much enjoyed the aha moment when I realised there were lots of black and white things on the grid. I then guessed OREO since it is a very cruciverbal word. It was only when I post-googled that I saw that they have a double cross on them, thereby explaining HINT. :D
    • DrTom constructor · 2024-07-10T13:43:31.056Z
Thank you, it worked just as I hoped. The HINT clue may elude some, but I like to throw one in.
      Loved your puzzle yesterday.

The answer made me chuckle. Nice one, Tom!

Guessed penguin first. Then realized that OREO was missing (I think it's a law somewhere that OREO has to be in every crossword puzzle). Thanks for the puzzle, Tom!

The rule is that if you create more than 4 puzzles without referring either to OREO, TERN/ERNE or ETUI your 5th puzzle will spontaneously combust if printed out or release a deadly computer virus if done on-line. I toyed with simply a "black and white cookie" and a Seinfeld reference but it was cryptic enough already. I can see penguin though (and his uncle from "Car 54 Where Are You", that also had a black and white car, Fred Gwynne).
          Thank you for solving

Just guessed. The Nabisco logo has evolved over the years, but the current iteration on Oreos seems to be by this guy, who is responsible for a ton of iconic logos: https://www.gerardhuerta.com/

Had a bit of a rough go in the SW thanks to not knowing 34D or being able to decode 41D (plus some mistakes lol), but once I got the grid sorted it didn't take very long. Was thinking MACO/ORCA swap might be important at first, but then saw the ORCA/PANDA connection and it was basically instant from there. Totally forgot about the hint at 41D. 😂 Fun one, thanks. :)

Sorry Alan, I naturally assume everyone is vintage like me! Jay North was such a great Dennis (and incidentally always reminded me of the girl in "The Bad Seed") I assumed everyone had heard of him.

Someday there will be a clue: Name the cookie that Ali would choose after a sword fight with his epee to defend Yma Sumac's sea eagle. Until then we ahve this.

I guessed penguin, crossword, crossword puzzle before looking at a list of black and white things and finding oreo.

A crossword without an Oreo is like a day without Sunshine (or rather Nabisco).

Vague remembrance of test solving this one.. it took me a while to pick up on the meta (the clues/fill were more familiar!) Kinda remember talking about titles? Definitely don’t remember the cross on the cookie! Anyway, fun even if it was the second go-round.

I would LOVE to take credit for the superb "Double Cross" and its reference to the design on the Oreo Cookie (☨). It would show my increasing mastery of the meta process and knowledge of trademarks....alas that is my good friend Sirhan Dipendi. The double-cross I was trying to highlight is the fact that HINT crosses TWO of the Black and White terms. Gosh I wish I were as clever as I seemed, but thanks for thinking for a moment I was.
                    • Sendhil Revuluri 🤓3:34 · 2024-07-10T20:07:50.236Z
Got it! Apologies for the many incorrect answers before finally entering the right one (even ORCA which I now see is in the grid). I even guessed "Cookie" (but the wrong one). Still way better than my average meta!

Like I said, the implied ones are the worst because you have to be inside my mind to know what I mean (and that is a VERY scary place to be I am told!). Thanks for sticking with it.

Fun one! Didn't "get" the hint until after I solved. Haha I guess I inhale them too fast to ever notice any patterns.

First guess- Black and White; then re-read the prompt. I avoided the skunk!
                          • rjy 2s · 2024-07-11T14:03:00.746Z
Wow - completely whiffed on this for awhile. "Double cross" had me staring at crossings in the grid, and my eyes lit up seeing EMO/OME crossing and AYN/NYA. The game is afoot! Spent stupid time looking for crossings that maybe could match, or could be a letter away from a match/meta answer. Then, missing the B&W angle, I instead saw OLDphotos and NEWspaper, or YIN and YANG, and thought opposites! Like All/Nothing! What else? ZEBRA and PANDA are symmetrically positioned... not opposites tho... but... oh! ... AAAAH!

Well that was the AHA, though I thought the "doble cross" clue might have helped more people than it apparently did. I'm glad you kept prodding your brain.

No. Wavelengths are wavelengths. Last time I got someone on my wavelength and she let the river answer, it said "hey, stop throwing your candy wrappers and beer bottles on my shore". Sometimes one just isn't in sych.

Hah. And, to think.... I had thought about throwing out OREO as an immediate guess, just because it seemed like it fit the prompt, but I was like- nah, there's nothing to justify guessing that, I won't even bother. Sure enough... here we are, post-nudges!
                                • Ergcat 13:38 · 2024-07-12T15:14:44.234Z
Nice one, Tom! Too bad I’m wasn’t bright enough to see the black/white objects! I needed the nudges and still interpreted it incorrectly… saw a lot of O’s and round things so I guessed OREO . Still a fun one! Thanks, Tom!
