Reveal: The numbers in parentheses after the clues tell you which letter to use from that word in the grid: 5A EPOCH use the 1st letter E, 20A INFINITY use N, 35A PERPETUITY use T, 40A MILLENNIUM use U, 53A ETERNITY use R, 65A YEAR use Y. These letters together spell ENTURY (A long time with no C) = Long time, no see. I know, I know. For you sticklers, the grid is not quite symmetrical- I meant to put YEARS at sixty-six across but forgot and published. Sorry if that messed you up! I'm thinking most people got this from the title and prompt.

Hah, very clever. I stared at ENTURY for about a minute, like... huh? Entury? WTF? Oh, DUH.

Glad I could solve this one!

Good meta, thanks for explaining. I had to reveal at 43D with 49A, 59A. And 30A with 31D, 33D.
