The answer to the meta is a three-word answer to a question
Why are we so obsessed with being first? I guess it comes from our innate selfishness, something the writers of the New Testament were at pains to counter. As Paul says in Phil 2:3-4, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." It's something we see in Jesus' teaching, too: "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
