Hello, Muggle friends!
This week's SSS had its genesis, I'm ashamed to admit, during a recent high-school performance of 34A (starring Marshall Gantt and Lilah Brennan, pictured here). Unfortunately, out of nowhere, a metanism popped into my head, followed by possible themers. I gave in, sneaking a pen out of my purse and jotting down ideas on the program. Once I got home and fired up Crosshare, the puzzle pretty much formed itself.
SSS Skipper Cap'n Rick was amused by the fact that I, a well-known ignoramus about professional sports, included several sports clues. Thanks to Rick for his always-excellent edits and to Joe Ross, our formatting wizard.
And speaking of Crosshare: Would you please join me in supporting this wonderful site during its annual fundraiser? Crosshare relies completely on contributions to keep it going, and I find it to be a vital and user-friendly resource when creating puzzles. To contribute, go to: https://crosshare.org/donate?utm_source=mailchimp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly. Thank you!

Nice. I thought the best one was LENTO, but then I also thought an Accolade was one of those big Cadillacs. I confess I am completely mystified as to how we get from Romeo and Juliet to this A-plus puzzle. Goldstar-crossed lovers?
Nicely done! I have to admit the ERNEST one had me going because, despite its frequent use in construction and solving I have not seen the movie/play and I did not think you would use the answer in the clue; which turned out to be a successful ruse. I also looked for (7) for a while until I lined up all the letters and realized I needed an A Plus. The 57A with the emphasized "clues" had me wondering if I missed something and there was another level but I simply said KISS (Keep It Sunday Stupid) in my head and went with the answer. THNKS WWNDY!!
indeed. Very nicely done. Spotted it right away thanks to the helpful 14A clue, but was still fun to work it out. And I got about halfway through before I realized why there was no #7 Very spiffy touch. It would have been worth intentionally putting them out of order just for that bit. :) Fun stuff as always, thanks.
That's high praise coming from you, Alan, the master of the alternate-answer metanism! Thank you! 14A was of course the first themer I came up with -- perhaps that was my mental connection with "Romeo & Juliet," who knows! And I absolutely LOVED the fact that I could leave out the (7).

I too searched for a (7) for more than a second thinking it was just my bad eyesight -- until I realized, oh yeah!
Really liked the (Ha)grid just in and of itself, and then of course the meta too on top of that. A++ (since there are two of them in the grid!)
Thoroughly enjoyable! Yes, a gold star for you. I’m going to assume these kids know nothing about your mid-performance distraction during their show. ( :

I’m so glad you jotted down those notes during the play.
Love seeing how prolific you’ve become since your debut, and the clever ideas you come up with. Like everyone else commenting, I loved the missing 7 too! Kudos!
Constructing a puzzle is a reward in itself, but it's just so much fun to watch people enjoy my creations. Thanks for the kind words!

No nudges needed: the mechanism and solving exactly as expected, except that I missed seeing the (1) (3) and (5) parentheses until about 10 minutes ago - which obviously left my sailboat rudderless. Nicely constructed, very straightforward.
