Where the Wild Things Are

◆◆ · Por woozy · Publicado 2024-02-01T16:31:49.774Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to this meta is the emotional impetus of the Wild Things
I came across a mention of Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" and thought it'd be a great title for a meta. I think the mechanism is standard but has a slightly original twist to it. But the grid fought me all the way.
So. LET THE ..... well, you know.
First nudge. Two of the entries are hints to the mechanism. As well there are several themer entries
Nudge two. It's not the answer to the two hint entries that are the hint. It's the clues.
Nudge 3: In nudge 2, I wasn't really considering 25D or 56 to be hints. (The hints and the themers are all across entries). But, yes, The Title says it All. You most figure out where the Wild Things Are. And one of the across clues tells you exactly where they are As well as what they are
Nudge 4: 10A is one of the key hints. "Let the wild rumpus start!" was a key phrase from the book. There are three odd things about this entry Why is RUMPUS in all caps? If the answer is WILD is it kosher to include the word "wild" in the clue? Well, there isn't too much to this. I just wanted to make sure this entry was meant to be a hint is all. Wait? Isn't it "Wild Things "? Why did I write "wild animals"?
Nudge 5:Okay, enough about the two hint entries (while I've only talked about one hint entry but if you found one the other should match), you still need to find the themers. How do you find the themers? Well, I've already told you how to find the themers, and what to look for in them.
Nudge 6: I went to the wild corners of the earth to foreshorten Thrace

This was so clever! I was confused with what to do with the animals I was seeing, then it clicked. Thank you!

Wow!! This was a very clever meta. When I saw EAGLE in REGALE I thought "hmm, okay. That's just a coincidence. EAGLE yes, PENGUIN no way. But yes you did find a way! Thanks for the fun!

Finally. Needed all the nudges and even then it took a while. Thanks for the puzzle, Woozy!

Impressive for many reasons, but still not deducing how I get the letter order. Or apply some of the nudges. I expect it'll all come out in the wash! Thanks, woozy!

Letter order? From the themers. RUMPUS=>REAGLE, USERHOSTILE, MOISTENING UP, POLYMORPHISM, UNFORGOTTEN, SHOVED=>EAGLE, HORSE, PENGUIN, SHRIMP, FROG, DOVE => MATE, ATOP, DIVERS, MINI, ANURA, XMAS =>MAD MAX

Aha! That explains it. Thanks for the clarification, woozy!

Incredibly clever construction - cool idea, masterful execution and a fun solve!
But - in my own case I was stymied by working backwards and didn't realize I had the pieces to the answer at hand. I figured anagrams, and to look for animals in the themers, but that was too random and hard (i.e., I found GNU in MOISTENINGUP). Then I realized - aha! there were animals in the clues! So I used those to look for anagrammed animals in the themers - and aha! the first and last entries too! The game is afoot! So now what? WOW! That spells RUMPUS! Cool! Now what? oof! Needed the call-a-friend lifeline to get back to the beginning...
All that said - very cool puzzle woozy!

So is the going backwards, usually you use the themers to spell something-- here you find the themers by spelling something; usually you use the themers to find alternate answers-- here you use alternate clues to decode the themers; usually the alternat answers from the themer are in alternate order; here they are in the themer order, was the going backward really that confounding. I did warn " I think the mechanism is standard but has a slightly original twist to it"
