          Or: The theme contains phrases that cant be broken into two words that contain an adjective synonymous to "boring" and a noun. For example, "drywall" is clued as "bland boundary" because dry acts here as and adjective for boring or bland and the wall is the boundary.

              Seriously. Especially with those crosses. “Nina Simone” who wrote Strange Fruit about lynchings. And also the “dark” crossing. Talk about the feeling of “meh”. doesn’t sit right at all. Never want to see Klan anywhere in my crossword grid. Especially because a one letter change, K —> E in the bottom left corner would have made DARE and ELAN.
              Otherwise this was a good puzzle but it makes me question if this was intentional or just a poorly thought out clue/answer
