Constructor's Note
Welcome to my zoo! I have nine enclosures, shaded in the grid. Each of the eight outer enclosures already contains an animal. They wander about a lot, so you might have to put a bit of work into seeing them. I'm introducing a new animal to the central enclosure. You should be able to work out the new animal from the clues. The across clues in the central enclosure tell you how to work out the animal, but you may have to do a bit of shuffling around to spot it. The down clues in the central enclosure tell you how to put the animal into the enclosure. Good luck!

This was awesome! I actually managed to get all of the animals and work out the center one, but gave up on some of the surrounding fill.

Really excellent and clever, I feel I am missing a joke at 46D however

Thanks! No joke missed. When I initially put the grid together I had Kahlo in mind, but spelled her Freda. Luckily I checked the spelling before publishing 😁

Well, I decided that the SE corner was "OLIVE WREN", which is absolutely not a real kind of bird (I might have been thinking of the olive sparrow, who knows), so that made the last step of figuring out the new animal quite difficult. Really nice puzzle.

😁 thanks for persevering to the end despite the fictional bird!
