  Nice theme! I really liked a lot of the misleading clues(especially [___-thin] which I had as pApER for the longest time). Other than a few tough crosses(NW corner and through the 3rd themer) and the semi-clunkiness of APE appearing twice-ish(Changing the OPEN/APE cross to, say, OXEN/AXE would fix this), I think you have a really quality puzzle here. Good work!

  Very fun theme and a fun and relatively smooth solve, thank you!

  Besides the themers, loved seeing 47A — I'm always amazed that searching for "a horse splashes" always brings up his essay.

  The only real issue I had was 14A which seemed over the line into extreme crosswordese. But that's in the eye of the beholder!

  I passed by a lot of typos in the clues — mostly innocuous, except for 39D where it was confusing.

  Agreed on 49D being mismatched.
