Meta Prompt: The meta answer is a two-word exclamation.
Hint: One of the early titles for this puzzle was "Shenk's for the Memories"
Hint: 40-Across is a hint to the "event" that occurred 5 years ago (see https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?t=36)
Hint: The mechanism used here is similar to the one Mike Shenk (aka "Marie Kelly", cousin of "Carri Kelly") used.
Hint: Instead of cities where college bowl games are played, this puzzle uses cities where universities are located (e.g. Auburn).
Hint: The first letters of the university cities spell the meta answer.
Here's a link to the solution on the "XWord Muggles Forum" - https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=116974#p116974

Lookin' good Cap'n. Happy New Year. Lions? Not the Pats? Who knew?
    • Capn Rick publisher · about 1 month ago
Thanks, Bob. Same to you! That would be the "Nittany" Lions (from State College, PA) who play in the Rose Bowl this afternoon.
      • boharr 7s · about 1 month ago
Ah! All those rabbit holes on the playing field.
    • KayW 🤓5:32 · about 1 month ago
VERY nice, "Carri". Clever and elegant meta, as always. Love the pseudonym, too. THIS time, I got it!
      • Capn Rick publisher · about 1 month ago
Nice job, Kay! Carri and I both thank you for solving. ;)

Really, really enjoyed this one. And learned a couple of things - always a nice bonus!
        • Capn Rick publisher · about 1 month ago
Glad you both enjoyed and learned something at the same time, imontoo! That's music to the ears of us constructors.

I saw the team names right away, but didn't get the right Tigers at first.
          • Capn Rick publisher · about 1 month ago
Yes, there are a few Tigers out there. Fortunately, Auburn provided the needed 'A'.
          • Bbaack 18:43 · about 1 month ago
Fun one! Had to backsolve for Auburn, but otherwise straight forward. I'm relatively new, so I don't get the pseudonym or 5-yr anniversary?
          • Carolyn 4s · about 1 month ago
Very nice! I wanted to use the TREE
            46A TREEGenealogy chart
for Stanford but it wasn't symmetrical! Had to sift through several TIGERs of course and 40A
            40A PAGEANTA kind of competition
said there would be another step. Cute. Happy New Year!

Thanks for solving, Carolyn. And I learned something about the Stanford Tree!

              A very fitting tribute!
Like the original, this one had me googling up a storm and listing all kinds of info to find what was useful
              • Capn Rick publisher · 30 days ago
Thanks, Barbara. I was hoping that I could do Mike Shenk's historic puzzle some justice.
              • Bird Lives 4s · about 1 month ago
Bravo. I solved and submitted via the forum, but I came here to see if any nonMuggle Crosshareistas got all or any of the references.
                • Capn Rick publisher · 30 days ago
Thanks, Jay. Yes, even a few Muggles have PM'ed me about the backstory. I'm afraid that many of the poor Crosshareistas (great name, BTW) will be totally lost.
                • DrTom 3s · 30 days ago
Very funny!!! Had a bit of trouble figuring I missed something cause I got NO TB GAIN and thought "dang what is the key thing here" when I remembered there are TWO teams with the name of TIGERS and though one is from BATON-ROUGE the other is from AUBURN. Glad I didn't flag on this one, I didn't make it to the last pageant and was afraid I'd be two for two. Fun start to the year and if this is Carri's inaugural, congratulations! Obviously a Cap'n tutored constructor because this one is clean and fun.
Oh, and this afternoon's bowl is going to be a difficult one for me. I am from PA and have rooted for PSU since 1966 BUT I went to the University of Utah - dilemma....
                  • Capn Rick publisher · 30 days ago
Thanks, DrTom. I sent you a PM re: our common PA roots. Yes, that is going to be a bit of a dilemma for you this afternoon. Let's hope it's an entertaining game!
                    • Sharkicicles 2s · 28 days ago
I also had NOT BGAIN but was able to backsolve.
I went to Illinois-UC so college football isn’t my strong suit…
                    • Ergcat 11:14 · 30 days ago
Good one! I knew right away that I didn’t want to “be pageanted” but what to do? We’re you looking for where these teams played Bowl Games in 2022? No because they all did not play in a bowl game. So maybe it was the city where the school was located? Aha, that works except there are sooooo many Tigers! Backsolved for “Auburn “. Fun way to start the New Year!
                      • Capn Rick publisher · 30 days ago
Great job figuring this one out, Ergcat. No Pageant for you!

This my worst subject so I didn't find everything even with Google, but still enough to be sure of the answer given the setup! Nice to get a chuckle today, thanks!

When I realized the answer wasn't going to be Really Rick, or even Not Carri, I found the actual solution. The whole premise is so very clever and fun! A bit of Tiger Trouble but I was pretty sure at least that Princeton wasn't in that league! Thanks, Rick!

Thank you, Claudia. Yes, there are a lot of Tiger mascots out there, but I knew folks would eventually get the right one.

Five years ago already? I was one of the original pageanted group. I figured we had gotten an easy end-of-year puzzle and gladly submitted without too much thought. Never made that mistake again. Enjoyed the flashback, though.
                                    • Capn Rick publisher · 29 days ago
Yes, mark, the original "Pageant" occurred on Dec. 29, 2017. I hadn't yet discovered metas at that time, so I missed out on the fun. Thought I could maybe experience some of that experience via this tribute puzzle.

This was before my time, though I've heard about the history behind PAGENTED. Nice touch that you wanted to post a memorial meta.

Thanks, ReB. It was actually before my time too, but when I saw that it was the 5th anniversary, I couldn't resist.
