Really slick -- lots of fun. There were some ambiguities as you mentioned, but once I had the mechanism they didn't pose a problem.

Awesome puzzle!! Can someone please explain how the meta was discovered?

Nice, Jay! Got caught for way longer than I care to admit in some rabbit holes but a clever mechanism to get to the answer, and another clever one that didn't!

Even knowing the answer, I can't figure out the meta. What am I missing?

Since these can only be read by those who have solved, someone help me know where the final letter “T” comes from! I had B in that spot… TI+BASIL (THAI BASIL) AND TI+BAR (TIE BAR). I don’t see a T-word that works. (Submitted the correct answer just because the first 4 letters suggested it.) Fun puzzle! I was in a deep rabbit hole because of pairs of words in clues, and all FIVE of those pairs were things you could hear: SONGS(1A, 25A), BIRDS(16A,61A), PIGGISH (pig) (47A,27D), DRUMMER/S(51A,66A), and FILM(64A,39D and 44D). Obviously there were some glitches in the system (words not exact, one had 3 entries), but it seemed unlikely to be coincidence because there were FIVE of them… though of course these led to nothing like a good answer…
