  Thank you - a very entertaining puzzle.

  5A got me! I've never before seen "screams" as a homophone indicator; Chambers Crossword Dictionary does not list it as a homophone indicator so I was totally stumped! I'm not sure that "shoos" is a strong enough synonym for "scrams" in that shooing is done by he who shoos and scramming is done by he who scrams. Of course, being an elderly Brit I have never heard the slang term "kicks" for shoes.

  Nevertheless, a very good cryptic.

    Thanks! I thought the same about shoos/scrams, but I found at least one dictionary that had “to leave” as a definition for shoo so I went with it—maybe I’ll think of something more fitting though.

  Fool that I am, I had to look up 1D, not seeing the abbreviation. I think 4A is E(MEN)D? If so, that's a tricky use of "out of," and I like the surface. 5A seems valid; it just had me fooled. Well done with a tricksier grid!
