It's funny how many of my meta ideas come while trying to solve other people's metas! This one was definitely inspired that way. I trust you will find your way to the answer to the meta, which is an adjective. Answer and explanation: https://www.xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=104271#p104271
Check out "The MOAT Mini Pack of Marching Bands" here: https://www.ephesusscroll.com/about/interest4.html. US$5 gets you 7 Marching Bands which, hard enough on their own, now contain metas too. And once again there's a mega-meta!

Learned a new word! Also enjoyed the Hitchhikers's quotes :-)
Great puzzle, Ben! The asymmetry caught my attention immediately.

I figured this had to be the mechanism but was too lazy to work it out until now! Thanks

I was lost without hints!
Got caught up in looking at the irregular verbs of SAT, DRUNK, and SEEN, but not much to work with! Even when I finally knew what to do, it was a real test of my old (college entrance) SAT -- "What number is on the other side of the cube..."
It was actually really hard to create, too. It wasn't until I completed the answer graphic that I could relax that I had it right!

I since figured out that my extra “irregular” spots were because when I divided the grid in half vert & horiz. I was off by a line (did it in the car, so…). With that fix, it of course all works out perfectly.

Took the nudges to discern the mechanism, though I had the thought all along. Still I needed to enter the black squares on a blank Excel 15x15 template and add the "extra" squares to create symmetry to identify the answer squares/letters, as I couldn't get the artwork to work on my PDF copy. Must have been a challenge to create the initial grid.
And now I see that there is an Excel sheet among the puzzle format choices. Using that early on would have made my life a lot easier. The PDF really obscured matters.
