PROVIDED/PROVIDING in cryptic crosswords usually means the letters IF (I will got out today PROVIDED it doesn't rain = I will go out today IF it doesn't rain. Geddit?) So "Partner we provided inside (4)" = WIFE However, in many clues, PROVIDED/PROVIDING/PROVIDES just means GIVES THE ANSWER, so don't get too carried away. One Q: on 5A, how do I tell if "we hear" describes the first or second definition?

In that particular example, it's because the FOR indicates that the following word is the definition. (FOR is often shorthand for "will give you a word that means...")

Question re 2d: by the order of the clue, I thought "er", not "if", would surround "n". For my own future clue setting, is it kosher to separate the ham from the bread like that?

Hardly an expert, but I interpreted it as (if + er) goes around n, so 'n' goes somewhere inside 'ifer', just my interpretation tho !

I intended it as Jolo says. I know what you mean - the wording does mislead you into thinking ER goes around N. Whether it's kosher or not depends very much on the house style of the publication (my gut feeling is the UK Independent would be fine with it, but the New York Times most definitely would not). I thought I'd get away with it here, because the across answers would fill in enough of the letters to make the answer clear.

That's reasonable. And hey, I got it, so that's a point towards the clue being fair.
