  6A: Audibly "give it a go" -> Sounds like "try it" = TRITE

  7A: Flowers -> Irises, losing first letter to become RISES

  8A: Spin[ach es]sentially = ACHES

  9A: Whiskey -> W, dreadful [year] -> EARY = WEARY

  1D: A witch might have these -> WARTS, reversed = STRAW

  2D: Endless jab = PRIC[K] - K -> PRIC, Drug -> E = PRICE

  3D: Is -> IS; inside Norwegian band -> AHA = AISHA

  4D: Double definition; Give direction to = Bull = STEER

  5D: Footballer -> Messi; Sounds like "Messi" = MESSY

  Thanks! Really like the 1D def, & 9A surface is especially good. Really solid across the board, though the 6A homophone does not really work for my accent at least.

  I really liked 9A, 3D, and 5D. Cryptic stuff was good all around (even the too-me stretch of "try it" for TRITE). I suppose I don't fully understand the surface sense of 1A, but that's probably just me.
