I’m surprised that it’s not in more dictionaries, but W for win is common in sports and in slang, as Larry said.

Thanks for taking the time to reply; in the UK W is usually "won", as in the league tables for sports (W, L, D for won, lost , drawn); interestingly, Chambers abbreviation dictionary includes "won" (W) but does not have L for "lost" and D for "drawn".
It must be another US v UK issue. Thanks for the information; another abbreviation for my list!
