Meta Prompt
The answer to this meta is not a 5-letter word although it wants to be; it's a two word phrase that has nearly nothing to do with any theme or mechanism
There's a bit of creative licensing in the meta answer. And the mechanism requires a bit of out of the box thinking.
Anyway, to my surprise one of the hardest parts of constructing a crossword is making a grid pattern that feels natural and works. This entire puzzle was an experiment. I "borrowed" another grid pattern and entered the themers and let the Crosshare software do all the rest of the work. I'm not sure what I learned. It had to have been something though. Otherwise there would have been no point in doing it.

    The answer is SPACE ZONE.
The entries for clues with numbers at the end of them are
    1. (Thumb) A RIDE
    2. (Pinky) SWEAR
    3. (Ring) TONE
    4. (Index) CARD
    5. (Middle) GROUND
The entries for clues with asterisks are all typed with one type of your fingers then are, in the order listed above:
[SPACE] (with Thumbs 1) That was the creative license referred to in the blog post ZAP (with Pinkies 2) OWLS (with Middle fingesr 3) NUMB (with Index fingers 4) and EDDIE (with Middle fingers 5)
That spells out (sort of) SPACE ZONE

An irritation of Internet listicles is that in a weird belief that longer is better they will over-include and so for a list of this type of celebrity the will falsely include Elvis (Presley), Oprah (Winfrey) and even, god forbid, Ellen (Degeneres) who clearly don't belong on the list at all.
