Sound Alternative

Meta Prompt
The answer to this meta is a sound alternative
This is a "retaliation" meta, whipped out as a joke response to Matt Gaffney's MGWCC#826 "Sound Alternative". I haven't completed that one yet (it's a week 5) and sometimes it's easier to do a retaliation puzzle than to solve one.
This one is playing tougher than I thought: So
Nudge 1: There's no code or puzzle to decrypt
Nudge 2: Synonyms roll
Nudge 3: Homophones troll
Nudge 6: Six entries matter. 14 were afterthoughts provided by CrossHare
One submitter submitted the funny Yanny. It took me a while to figure it out and I'm really tempted to give it credit. But in the end I figure, we can involve 4 more entries

The answer is BAY. There are five entries (RECESS, STRAIT, SORREL, LAUREL, and HOWL) that can also be answered with the word BAY, which if we consider SOUND to be a body of water (as implied in 6A) then BAY is a sound alternative

[Post-script: I made clues for the down clues for the letters with no cross-clues, but I completely forget to do the same for the across clues.... Okay, the single isolated letter of 18A is a grade you get for the effort of trying. The letter of 1A is a curve that may send you flying. Together they make by all accounts, a two letter word for comparing equal amounts.]
