As detailed in a previous crossword, LAKE often clues the letter L and RIVER often clues the letter R. Sometimes, though, they can clue the name of an actual lake or river: Lake Superior and Lake Erie are particularly popular with crossword setters, for fairly obvious reasons. Other words which commonly clue the name of a river are FLOWER, BANKER and RUNNER. Fun as always! (5A and 6A felt particularly satisfying as the wordplay came together a couple letters at a time.) This time I'm still stymied by 2D; any tips? Thank you!
Glad you asked… I realized I’m fuzzy on this too! I think “African flowers” is NILES and that “garlands” the GG, but not sure how the “child’s horse” gives us that part.
Children often call a horse a GEEGEE or GG - it's a common "joke" (such as it is) in a lot of British crosswords. But you're spot on with African flowers, Sendhil. And thank you, Guy x
Oh, I really loved 1D, 4D, and 5A, even if I as an American struggled a bit with 7A lol

I started this a couple of days ago, got stuck on the , came back to it now, only to find a blank grid... Hence the speediness with which I seem to have whizzed through this one.
