Par for the course

◆◆ · By woozy · Published 2024-04-10T18:09:46.953Z

Meta Prompt
The answer to the meta is what is par for the golf course represented by the grid
(Oops.... I made this for the april midi contest, but I forgot that a midi was 11 x 11 and not 7 x 7. Oh, well. Here it is anyway)
Not that familiar with golf so I hope I did this right.
The meta is what is par for the golf course represented by the grid. This is a bit different but .... well... life is supposed to be different.
(Actually this one tough to make. It might be easier as a midi)
[Here's the one I ended-up submitting to the contest: https://crosshare.org/crosswords/kWVMaqGhdFUYjrxK3uR8/if-so-i-must-really-really-love-golf . Somehow the mechanism just didn't want to be replicated. (Once is inspiration. Twice is formulaic, I guess). So the one I'm submitting has a completely different mechanism. I think I still like this better though. Anyway.... https://crosshare.org/crosswords/kWVMaqGhdFUYjrxK3uR8/if-so-i-must-really-really-love-golf goes public the day after tomorrow but I'm giving you all a sneak peak]

This doesn't really affect the puzzle, but just FYI: in golf lingo, under par is good. Albatrosses (the biggest birds) are 3 under par, eagles (big birds) are two under, birdies (normal birds) are one under, bogeys one over, then it just goes double bogey, triple bogey, quad bogey, etc.

Dang it! I knew that and I had that in mind and I meant that but I typed.... Oh, well. sigh.

        The answer is THREE
You start at the T("tee") in the upper right hand corner.
If you go directly to the hole by going south-east over the letter ERN, you have gone two under par and made an EAGLE (a white tailed sea eagle, to be exact)
If you make it in two shots by going right over SMEW (the European water bird) and down over WREN, you have gone one under par and made a BIRDY.
You can make a BOGEY by going one over par in four shots by going down over GOTHIC, right over CHIMERA, then up over ALIEN, and then down and to the left over NO.

Impressive! Really clever how you incorporated the par.

this was a really cool meta! had to ultimately brute force it--the thing i missed was that words could go diagonally.

Yeah... I didn't know how to hint that without giving it away. That's what the hint in 23A was referring to.

oh i see, i thought that clue was indicating that the clued words could stop before they hit a bar or the hole (so NO could be spelled going west from ALIEN instead of going southwest)

I didn't catch NO because I was looking for another T to answer the true/false question. D'oh!

I will not tell you where to fill in the entries for the following 8 clues: Figuring where they fit is part of the puzzle. However, I am listing the clues "in order" (but just exactly what order that is is for you to determine. a) Single letter homophone for golf ball peg where you start playing a hole. b) White tailed sea eagle c) Water birdy that breeds in the taiga of northern Europe (Mergellus albellus) d) Little song birdy e) Appropriate atmosphere for many bogey or haunting spirit f) a bogey composed of incongruous or unidentifiable parts g) A foreign bogey h) Answer to a true/false question: "Is a bogey something normal and to be expected?"
