Hey solvers! Thanks for dropping by and giving my puzzle a shot. I fear this one may be more difficult than most, so commisserations if you got snagged on my horribly mean and spiteful clues. I'll try to justify my worst transgressions in the wash-up below.
ACROSS. 1A. anag. UPITSELF. 7A. "notice" = CLOCK + "business" = WORK. 8A. Double def. wrt Noel Coward. 9A. "hem" = SEW containing first lettet of "pocket". 11A. anag. ITSPOORER. 12A. deletion of "depression" = DIP from "good fortune" = SERENDIPITY.
DOWN. 2D. substitute "in favour" = PRO for "against" = CON in "like old King Edward" = CONFESSOR. 3D. hidden in tomaTOKEtchup. 4D. Cryptic def. 5D. "Skywalker" = LUKE + "friendly" = WARM. 6D. "drunken homophone" of "shots" = SNAPS, &lit. 10D. double def.
Special apologies for 2D, although I originally planned to clue it even more obtusely: "Old King Edward switching sides? That's academic (9)"

Thanks for a great cryptic, as usual; I liked it a lot! 2D Would "in favour of" be acceptable for PRO? That opens up more options for the surface reading. 12A Masterful! I have to admit to a lucky guess of a synonym for "peace" using the letters provided by 2D and 6D.
