CHANGING ENDS come in various types, but they always involve SWAPPING THE FIRST AND LAST LETTER OF THE WORD. In the easiest kind, the word that you have to swap the first and last letter of the word is actually mentioned in the clue, along with the definition, e.g. "It's trad to change ends. Dang! (4)", where the answer would be DRAT (you swap the first and last letter of TRAD and get a synonym for DANG!) Some (but not all) of the clues in this crossword involve changing ends. "Berk" in English is actually Cockney rhyming slang for something very rude (something that rhymes with Berkshire Hunt, which is what "berk" was originally short for). Despite this, "berk" is generally considered a family-friendly insult, like "wally" or "numpty".
