Meta Prompt
[Level 3] The answer to the meta is a 4-letter title. Nudges: https://xword-muggles.com/viewtopic.php?p=124441
Hey there! Mikey G here, hoping that you try meta #50 on for size.
This one is a bit avant-garde in that you might argue there are two separate mechanisms here. One was meant to be an Easter egg, but this egg just might give you what you need before perhaps the more hidden mechanism does. (Of course, you’re not required to find both.) Either way, may meta success be yours!
See you next time!
Mikey G

    Good job Mikey--quite the deed
    • Hector 2s · 2023-03-18T18:08:05.001Z
Thanks! I guess one clue is the lack of Ls in the grid, another mechanism is the clues for the four symmetrically placed 1221-pattern entries spelling ELLE (using the only Ls in the clues). Plus FIFTYFIFTY combined with the roman numeral nudge suggests LL, and there's Anna Wintour, magazine issues and editing... Did I miss anything?
      • Mikey G constructor · 2023-03-18T19:56:36.967Z
I think that's everything! 1221 with initial clue letters (ELLE), coupled with title, was the main. You could use main spanner for confirmation. Easter Egg was XXV to LL, coupled with no other Ls in the grid (clue for FIFTYFIFTY also gives us a nod to the center in ELLE being LL) or the clues, other than the two required! Wintour just happened to come up somewhat randomly, but it got us the initial E for the clue and is kind of a tie-in, so we'll take it. That was in vogue indeed!

Ah, now just noticing there are only two Ls in the clues. Nice! What's next, a No-L puzzle for Christmas? ;)

NOEL was my first submission, followed by LEON.

I see one way to get the answer, but maybe not the other. I’ll keep thinking about it. Thanks, Mikey!

So did I get the meta or the easter egg?
          • Mikey G constructor · 2023-03-18T19:53:45.926Z
            One of them, haha

I just noticed the four palindromes and when they didn't give me anything I went to their clues. That's probably not either metanism! Thanks, Mikey!
              • Abide 4s · 2023-03-19T03:23:45.674Z
I saw the palindromes and brute-forced it from this page https://www.lotsofwords.com/palindromes/4-letters/dictionary (ABBA would have been my second guess). I like your explanation better!
                • Tyrpmom 3s · 2023-03-19T22:21:26.515Z
Forgot I was supposed to be two mechanisms. I didn’t even notice the lack of L’s. Really impressive.
                  • whimsy 16:38 · 2023-03-21T20:46:20.560Z
Oh, the places I went before going with the palindromes -- namely, that if you read 35A backwards, you get SEUSS that almost goes back to ME. The Cat in the Hat always was quite stylish! Thanks, Mikey! I got a lot of fun out of this!

Oh, and I knew "try puzzle #50 on for size" must have meant something! :)

Needed the first 3 main mechanism nudges. I... wasn't even close before, when I thought I almost had it :-) Nice puzzle, thanks!
