This month’s midi contest tasked constructors with making “a puzzle worth cracking,” so naturally I tried my hand at a meta crossword. The meta answer is eight letters long, but only one character.

Beautiful! I worked through a few other possibilities with the numbers before finally getting to the one I should have tried right away, the A1Z26 cipher... like you clearly told us to in the puzzle. LOL.
This one came together super cleanly, for both the fill and the answer. It's often a toss-up whether I can wrap my head around a meta, but this one was very well constructed -- Brava!
I happened to guess this because I thought of an 8-lettered character who is connected to mysteries.
I don’t understand how I was supposed to suss it out.
Any help ?

23-Down points towards an A1Z26 cipher (meaning that the number 1 = A, 2 = B, etc). Then you just have to find all of the numbers in the clues (eight in total) and find their corresponding letter using the cipher, which will give you SHERLOCK. Hope that helps!
