The answer to 1D is AVIS and the answer to 4D is YELL, but the gimmick of the italicized entries is to move the "top" letter of a down entry "down" to the bottom — so the first letter moves to the end, making AVIS into VISA and ELLY into YELL.
I'm agreeing with wordsforthebirds to a certain extent. I get now, after solving, that VISA and ELLY convert to AVIS and YELL, but Daily Minis don't usually have these alternative spellings or whatever they're termed. Definitely a challenging puzzle, but it would have been better over a cup of caffeine tomorrow morning than over a 3rd beer this evening

Understandable — Kieran has been doing a lot of these gimmicks lately so I've been careful to read the titles on their puzzles! I will say that if there's an italicized/asterisked clue, or shaded/circled cells, there is probably some sort of gimmick in the puzzle or maybe a meta.
