Shame the implementation of the NYT puzzle didn't work out for many solvers (including me) - it's a really fun idea.
This'll be the last NYT Minimised for a bit while I'm on holidays. Thanks for the continued support!

      The eyes have it.

Have a wonderful time! (The key sigs in the clues don't match the answers - is that what you meant by implementation?)

I was referring to how many app users saw black bars instead of the intended key + clue combinations. Linking to all-image clues was my workaround, and I think I got the music keys right - let me know if they need correcting!

Assuming all keys are supposed to be major keys, 1A should be two sharps and 10A should have… eight sharps‽

Apologies guys, I added one too many sharps and missed a double sharp. My lack of musical training is showing. The images should be correct now!

I was half expecting today's minimized NYT crossword to lean into the accidental theme and have a bunch of enigmatic boxes (instead of trying to follow the musical theme at all).
Maybe one box could represent the monolith from 2001. There have got to be a bunch of other things that can be represented by an empty rectangle. 😛

I did upload this crossword a long time ago [over a year, whoa], and when I first saw the bars that's where I thought the puzzle was going. In the end I decided that honouring the intent of the author was more fun.
But hey, the concept's still there, and you've got ideas - make it so!
            • Puzzled 🤓4:04 · 2023-09-29T16:14:23.526Z
Yeah, I think honoring the intent of the author was a great choice.
If it weren't such a busy week at work, I might have found time yesterday to do one. It's just not something that makes sense to do a week or two later when no one knows the context anymore.
And your approach is just nicer, anyway.

Your image for 1A is in A major, not D!

                      Fixed, sorry!

Very fun! (And you definitely did a better job implementing the theme entry pictorial clues than the NYT iOS app did!)
